It’s Not Hard To Say Thank You

In media, we use a lot of buzzwords, catchphrases and acronyms to do our job. Yet sometimes, the simplest words can be overlooked as we puruse what we need.

Take “thank you” for example. 2 words, 8 letters, takes less than a second to say. So why is it so often forgotten?

Mike wrote a great blog post about sending thank you notes to your clients, and how to craft a good one. But when was the last time you thanked them for a regular booking? For an appointment? For their business? It doesn’t always need to be a note, just say it.

Similarly, are you saying thank you to your internal resources? In every business, departments rely on other departments to operate and media sales is no different. As a sales person, you may at any one time, need to rely on operations, production, editorial, marketing, strategy, design or insights. How are you approaching them? How much are they doing for you? How are you rewarding them? It’s easy to say “but that’s their job”, but that doesn’t mean it has to be thankless.

Everyone complains about not enough hours in the day to get everything done, but this doesn’t take long – a quick email, an IM, over the phone, in person. It makes the person who delivered it feel valued, and more inclined to be helpful next time.

Give it a shot.
